Medical Profiles and Data Base of National Athletes
June 4, 2009
The Chairman NOC, Mr. Hemasiri Fernando appointed a new NOC Medical Committee, under the Chairmanship of Dr. C.Thurairaja to conduct all medical matters that would uplift the present standards of Sports Medicine, and provide access to the best professional medical services to all athletes, sportsmen and sportswomen. This would long term enable Sri Lanka to win Olympic Gold Medals in the future and compete on equal terms with other countries in all International Sports Competitions.
As the first step the Medical Committee identified the need to establish a Medical Profile and Data base of all National Athletes, Sportsmen and Sportswomen in Sri Lanka. This important aspect has been lacking. This is the first occasion when a coordinated team of doctors from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Sports and the Private Sector Health services all of whom have trained in Sports Medicine, will conduct such an examination on athletes. In the next stage this would be extended to all aspiring future athletes and sportsmen in all age groups throughout the country.
On 4th June 2009 the first of the complete Medical and Physical Fitness assessment examination on athletes was launched at the Olympic House of NOC. There were over 20 doctors who participated in this examination. These doctors were trained and qualified in sports medicine and have volunteered their services and are travelling from Kandy, Kurunagela, Matara, Anuradhapura, Kelaniya to support the NOC Medical Committee.
