An Attire for Athletes representing Sri Lanka

July 6, 2009

There was a need for having a common standard for the attire of the athletes representing Sri Lanka. Mainly because of lack of consistent in the attire worn in the opening ceremonies or closing ceremonies, even at the award of medals upon winning. And there was no protocol or standard for athletes representing Sri Lanka on what they require to wear when they appear representing the country in the international arena of sports. At the same time, Sri Lanka did not have the athletes representing the country wearing the colors representing the national identity, whereas typically attire of athletes reflects the identity of the national flag of each respective nation. We missed an opportunity to take our identity in a unique way in the International arena of sports therefore. The need for a concentrated effort arose, to come up with a national standard came up in this background.

The Minister of Sports and Public Recreation Hon. Gamini Lokuge, knowing the importance of this exercise established a committee to look into the matter and design an attire for athletes representing Sri Lanka.

The committee who was appointed by the Minister is as follows –

    • Mr. Hemasiri Fernando – Chairman
    • Prof. Susiripala Malimbada
    • Mr. Ramyawardena Podinilame
    • Ms. Prathibhani Manthrirathne
    • Ms. Mayuri Wijayasundara
    • Ms. Gayathri Liyanage

Following are the design concepts for each of the dresses;

1. Track kit and the T Shirt

Print Print

At the first it is expected that our athletes will be identified as Sri Lankans, proudly carrying the identity of the national flag in the attire. The track kit, which is the official attire to wear in the closing ceremonies as well as at the time of award of medals, therefore is based on that concept of probing and reminding the colors of our National flag

The T shirt, suitable for tropical climates is primarily in white. Negotiating with the track kit and once again reflecting the theme in the national flag, the T shirt also carries the national identity in the colors.

2. Opening Ceremony Dress for Women

K-02

The female costume consists of a handloom saree, the osariya worn in the Kandyan style. The set of jewellery and accessories consist of the traditional agate “Agasthi” necklace, “kudu karabu”, “hawadiya” and the bracelet similar to the “bola valau”

3. Opening Ceremony Dress for Men

S-01

The male costume is a simple sarama and baniyama again made with handloom clothes specific to Sri Lanka. The common style baniyama is a sign of simplicity and expected to represent a symbolic identity for male costume in the Southern, Nothern and other parts of the country as a combination.

The Presenting of these dresses were held at a Press Briefing held at the Olympic House on 24th June 2009.

The committee will assess and benchmark the new attire in the Youth Asian Games in Singapore. After any amendments requiring had been made following the assessment and review, the final task will be to propose a national standard to the minister of sports in a report. Once accepted, a national standard on production specifications and protocols in use of these dresses will be established and enacted by the Minister of Sports.
