Silver Medal to Susanthika at Sydney Olympics 2000

National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka received the Silver Medal of Susanthika Jayasinghe to the 200m women’s track & field event of the XXVII Olympiad in 2000 in Sydney, from International Olympic Committee this morning.

Mr. Michael Karunathilake, Administrative Secretary of the NOC officially handed over the medal to Mr. Prema Pinnawela, Secretary General of Athletic Association of Sri Lanka on 26th April 2010 at the NOC SL.

Death of Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch former President of the International Olympic Committee

The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka is deeply saddened by the death of Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch former President of the International Olympic Committee.

Mr. Samaranch was appointed Honorary life President of the International Olympic Committee when he stepped down as President in 2001. Mr. Samaranch was admitted to a hospital in native Barcelona on Sunday with acute heart problem and passed away on Wednesday at 1325 local time. A hospital bulletin stated the he has died as a result of cardiorespitary failure.

Born on July 17 1920, Mr. Samaranch enjoyed success as a roller skater and let the Spanish team to the world title. He pursed a career in sports politics in Dictator Francisco Franco’s fascist Spain and won a place on the IOC in 1966.

After Franco’s death, he was appointed ambassador to the Soviet Union and the contacts he made there helped him succeeded Lord Killanin as IOC President in 1980.

Mr. Samaranch served as the President of the International Olympic Committee for a period of 21 years and is considered by many as a man who built up the Olympic Games of the modern era. Mr. Samaranch has many significant achievements, championing the representation of women and overseeing the entry of 1st women member in 1980. He was also responsible for setting up the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Mr. Samaranch made a short visit to Sri Lanka in 1983.

His body will lie at rest in the chapel at the Catalan Regional Government palace for members of the public to pay their respects between 1000 and 1500 tomorrow. His coffin will then be carried on the shoulders of a group of athletes to the funeral at the nearby city cathedral.

Commonwealth Games, Delhi 2010 – Queen’s Baton Relay

The Queens Baton Relay is one of the greatest traditions of the Commonwealth Games, having been the curtain-raiser to every Games since Cardiff 1958. The relay symbolises the gathering of people from across the Commonwealth at the four-yearly festival of sport and culture.

The Delhi 2010 Baton Relay was launched on 29th October 2009 at Buckingham Palace in London, with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II handing the Baton to the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, who in turn passed it to Dr. M. S Gill and Mr. Suresh Kalmadi. Mr. Kalmadi then had the honour of passing the Baton to the first Baton bearer, Abhinav Bindra, the Olympic air rifle champion who began the Baton’s journey with a relay around the Queen Victoria Monument.

The first team of Baton bearers included: Lord Sebastian Coe, Kapil Dev, Sania Mirza, Milka Singh, Dame Kelly Holmes, Vijender Kumar and Susan Gilroy to name just a few.

The Queen’s Baton will travel through all the Commonwealth countries until it lands in India where it will spend 100 days touring the 28 states. It will then be taken to its final destination, the Jawaharlal Neru Stadium for the Opening Ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games, where Her Majesty’s message will be read aloud to the athletes.

We as Sri Lankans are greatly honored and proud that our closest neighbour and friend in this prestigious event. The Queens Baton Relay journey would traverse through Sri Lanka from 18th & 19th June, ending in Colombo with a ceremonial closure.

2018 Commonwealth Games Bid

Sri Lanka has made a strong bid to organise the Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in 2018. The venue selected is Hambantota. There have been up to now two countries namely Australia and Sri Lanka bidding for the right to organise the Games. Sri Lanka has been promised the support of several countries in the Commonwealth Games.

MEMOS XIV September 2010 – September 2011

The MEMOS programme in English is based on four face-to-face training modules. Each of the first three modules follows the same one-week format from Sunday to Sunday. All participants must arrive on a Sunday and leave the following Sunday. Lectures, group work and other learning activities are held from Monday to Thursday, all day (9 am to 6 pm) and frequently in the evenings.

While the first three modules are taught in discrete blocks, Module 4 is taught on the Friday and Saturday of each of the first three weeks, with lectures and coaching with tutors, and presentations by participants to demonstrate progress on the projects to, and to discuss with, classmates and tutors. The module culminates in the fourth teaching block which is dedicated to the defence of the projects in front of a jury and their final public presentation followed by a graduation ceremony. All MEMOS XIV participants are required to conduct an individual project during their study year (September 2010-September 2011). In principle, their project deals with the management of the participant’s sport organisation (or one to which they have easy access). The project topic must be discussed with the sport organisation and specified in the candidature form. A tutor is assigned to each participant who coaches him or her during the two last days of modules 1 to 3. Between the teaching blocks, participants and tutors maintain close contact by e-mail and telephone. The project topic must be fully confirmed at the end of the first module. The literature review and methodology are discussed and reviewed at the second module.         A draft of the project report must be presented at the third module. “Sashiranga” First to Qualify for the YOG, Singapore – 2010

A.M. Hasintha Shashiranga, a leading Table Tennis player of Sri Lanka, who is at present being trained in Sweden, qualified to participate in the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games which is to be held in Singapore from 14th to 26th August 2010.

 

As per the Qualification System of the YOG, the top four players in the Singles events of the Asian Qualification Tournament, held in Bangkok Thailand from 2nd to 4th April 2010, were to qualify for the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games, Singapore – 2010.

 

Shashiranga who competed with a Korean player in the final match of this tournament lost by 2 points and won the 2nd place in the overall tournament. Accordingly he qualified to participate in the Singapore 2010 representing the country.
