1st Youth Olympic Games – Singapore

The 1st Youth Olympic Games were held from 14th to 26th August 2010 in Singapore. Nearly 3600 young athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 from 205 different countries took part in 26 different sports in this event. Sri Lanka participated with a team of 7 athletes and 7 officials. The contingent was lead by Mr. Nishanthe Piyasena (Assistant Secretary-NOCSL, Vice President-Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka) as the Chef De Mission and Ms. Dilmini Direckze (Member-Women in Sports Committee of NOCSL, Vice President – Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka) accompanied the team as the Lady Chaperone.

The contingent left the island for the Games on 13th August 2010. An official function was organized by the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka to bless the team was held on 12th August 2010 at 9.30 p.m. at the “Olympic House”. They met Hon. C.B. Ratnayake, Minister of Sports and the official group photograph of the contingent was taken on this occasion. The national costumes were also handed over to the team by the Hon. Minister of Sports.

Another historical event also took place on the same occasion. The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications made arrangements to issue a commemorative postage stamp in order to mark Sri Lanka’s participation in this first ever Youth Olympic Games. Hon. Jeewan Kumaratunge, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, also graced this occasion.

Results
Heshan took the plunge in the 50 Meters Backstroke on 17th Aug and finished eleventh overall in the straight semi-finals. He was placed eighth in his heat with 27.70 and in the process broke his own National Record in the event which stood at 27.81.

Indunil Herath from Walala Central, Menikhinna showed what stuff he was made of when in a great spurt he clinched third place in the Boys 1000 Metres Stage Two Final B at the Busan Stadium at the first ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on 22nd Aug. Singapore,Japan, New Zealand were among the countries beaten by him.

Boys 1000m B Final |
Indunil got this opportunity because of his performance in the Boys 1000 Metres Heats on August 17 at which he was placed seventh out of ten competitors and clocked 2:38, which was also his personal best.
Passing away of Dr. Ray Wijewardane

The National Olympic Committee notes with deep regrets the passing away of Deshyamanya, Vidyajothi Dr. Ray Wijewardane, Olympic Yachtsman. Dr. Ray Wijewardane has lived a full life for over 80 years. A life filled with many accomplishments. After graduating from Cambridge University with a BSc degree in Agriculture, he served in Nigeria as the Head of the Agricultural Research Institute. Dr. Ray Wijewardane started his sporting career on Rowing. Soon he shifted to Yachting and was fortunate in representing Sri Lanka in this sport at the Mexican Olympic Games in 1968 and Asian Games in 1970 at Bangkok. Participating in the Mexican Olympics was an experience rather than a victory. His international victory came in the Bangkok Asian Games in 1970. Participating the enterprise class he won a Silver medal. Dr. Ray Wijewardane served as the Chancellor of the Moratuwa University. He was the primary authority on Sri Lankan Coconut Cultivation and was the Originator of the handheld tractor and inventor of numerous flying machines. May he attain Nibbana. |
