Dr. C Thurairaja was inducted as the first Sri Lankan President of the ‘Asian Federation of Sports Medicine, which governs all Asian Region Sports Medicine countries.

The Executive Committee meeting of ‘Asian Federation of Sports Medicine’ (AFSM) and an AFSM Sports Medicine Education Seminar were held on 25th and 26th February 2011. The AFSM Executive Committee meeting was held on 25th Friday at Renuka City Hotel – Colombo, where the Heads of Sports Medicine countries Oman, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, India, Pakistan, China, Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand, were present.
Sri Lankan Doctor, Major General Dr C.Thurairaja was appointed to lead the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM) as the New President at this meeting. He is the first ever Sri Lankan to become the President of AFSM in which 45 Asian countries are elected as the Sports Medicine Member Countries affiliated through the National Sports Medicine Organizations.
Dr.C Thurairaja was the Founder President) of AFSM and has been the Vice President of AFSM since 1998 and one of the longest standing executive committee members of the AFSM. He is also an Ex Co Member and a Fellow of the International Federation of Sports Medicine and in the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association(SLSMA), continues to be a key Ex Co member responsible for developing and initiating the Post Graduate Programmes such as the Diploma in Sports Medicine, which is implemented through the Board of Study in Sports Medicine of the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM),University of Colombo.
During his career as a doctor he served as a Consultant Radiologist, Medical Advisor and Director of Medical Services in Sri Lanka Army and is a leading Sports Physician. He represented Sri Lanka at National level in Golf, Basketball, Rugby, Badminton, Sara Trophy Cricket and Tennis Senior Nationals, in addition been the Asian Games Team Contingent Captain having played 02 sports, Basketball and Golf at Asian Games. He is also the Chairman NOC Medical Committee, that has conducted IOC NOC ans NOC SLSMA Sports Medicine Courses for doctors.
The induction of Dr.C.Thurairaja as the New President, was done by the out-going President of AFSM – Dr.Wahid Al Kharusi at a ceremony held at the Olympic House, (NOC) Colombo on 26th February 2011. This function was held under the patronage of the Honorable Minister of Sports – Mr Mahindanada Aluthgamage . The AFSM Executive Members consisting of delegates from 10 Asian Countries, the Ex Co Members and President, Dr.H.J.Suraweera of Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association(SLSMA) and NOC, President Mr.Hemasiri Fernando, and other distinguished guests were present at this occasion.
On this occasion the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association (SLSMA) had 02 other landmark events where the SLSMA launched its official website that was done by the Honorable Minister of Sports Mr. Mahindananada Aluthgamage. This was followed by the issue of the first Newsletter of SLSMA which was handed over earlier to the Hon. Minister in his office, being handed out to all the Ex. Co Members of AFSM countries.
This followed by a meeting of the Hon. Minister, the AFSM delegates and the National SLSMA Ex Co members that gave the opportunity to discuss plans and methods by which, there will be greater cooperation and support for Sri Lanka to develop Sports Medicine, from the Regional Countries. Many important decisions were taken to forge closer links and cooperation between the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Health, AFSM, NOC and SLSMA that would benefit and enhance the knowledge and service of Sports Medicine in Sri Lanka. This would be of particular importance to support Sri Lanka during the Commonwealth Games 2018.
This ceremony was followed by a Sports Medicine Education Seminar that was conducted by the AFSM delegates in the NOC Auditorium, of the Olympic House for Doctors. All these events were organized by Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association (SLSMA) in collaboration with National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka.
OCA STANDING COMMITTEE – CALLING NOMINATIONS

The OCA general assembly will be held in Tokyo Japan on the 14th July. OCA had called nominations from interested NOCs/ NOC members to be served in Standing Committees for the term 2011 -2015.

All applications will be screened by the President and Secretary General and those who are likely to get elected will be notified and their applications will be submitted with NOC SL recommendations to OCA.
Criteria for selection would be as follows:
1. Contribution to the movement and A clean track record at NOC SL 2. Contribution as a Member for various volunteer work during the last 5 years 3. Seniority at NOC ( LONG STANDING MEMBERS WHO HAD CONTRIBUTED WILL BE GIVEN PRIORITY) 4. Expertise knowledge to be served in the sub- committee in question 5.Your justification to serve in that committee
The standing committees are; Athletes Committee , Finance Committee, Information & Statistics Committee , Culture Committee, Education Committee, Media Committee, Medical Committee , Rules Committee, Sports & Environment Committee, Sports for All Committee, Sports Committee , Women’s Committee.

London 2012 Scholarships

The NOCSL has made arrangements to obtain scholarships for the following athletes to undergo
overseas/local training in order to prepare themselves for the upcoming London Olympics.
These scholarships are awarded by the Olympic Solidarity of the IOC under the scheme of
“Athlete Preparation Programme of London 2012”.

Chaminda Wijekoon Sport: Athletics Event: 1500 m Chaminda is a national level athlete who won the Gold medal in 1500 m event at the Asian Athletic Championship which was held in China in 2009. He was awarded an Olympic Scholarship to undergo overseas training in the IAAF High Performance Training Centre (HPCT) in Eldoret, Kenya. Chaminda was already being trained in the same training centre before, but once the scholarship was awarded the Solidarity takes care of his expenses and training is being done in the same training centre. |

Shehan Abeypitiya Sport: Athletics Event: 100 m / 200 m Shehan is a national level athlete who won the Gold medal in 100 m event at the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games which was held in Pune, India in 2008. He was awarded an Olympic Scholarship to undergo overseas training in the IAAF High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) in Kingston, Jamaica with the Olympic Medalist Usain Bolt. |

Heshan Unamboowe Sport: Swimming Event: Backstroke Heshan is a junior national level athlete who won the Gold medal in 100 m Backstroke at the 11th South Asian Games which was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2010. He was awarded an Olympic Scholarship to undergo local training. All his expenses in respect of Olympic training are borne by the IOC Solidarity. |
Calling applications for the posts of Chef de Mission

Applications are called from NOC members who meets the following attributes/criteria for the post of
Chef de Mission London 2012
1. Senior Ex.Co Member who had a distinguished track record at the NOC and who has contributed towards the olympic movement.
2. At least applicant should have served in the capacity as Chef de mission and or Deputy chef de mission in a major games ( ie. SAG/Asian / Commonwealth).
3. Applicant should be able to spend quite a lot of time at the NOC office on pre games preparations to ensure LOGOC requirements are met.
4. Computer Literacy is a must.
Priority will be given to candidates who had never gone to olympics as an official/observer basis.
Chef de Mission – Commonwealth Youth Games – Isle of man
Applications are called for the post of CDM for Isle of man games to be held in Douglas in Isle of Man in Sept 2011.
Applicants should meet the following selection criteria:
1. Applicants should have completed the Advanced Sports Management Course conducted by the NOC and or following the said course at the NOC in 2011
2. Good track record in the national federation.
3. Out going personality with good communication skills
4. Be computer literate
5. Be prepared to spend a good amount of time in the pre-preparation of games at the NOC office.
6. Team player with a good record at the NOC
