Background

The Olympic Day falls on the 23rd of June. It is a week of celebrations across the world by the National Olympic Committees world wide.

The Olympic Day Run has been historically the symbolic event that commemorates the Olympic Day. However, in modern time, the Olympic day is celebrated with the inclusion of other activities such as educational and cultural activities in addition to its core event “The Olympic Day Run”, with a view to facilitate grater participation and decimation of the Olympic values amongst a wider cross section of children.

Event

The activities proposed to be held in Vavuniya this year, were planned over a two day period commencing with a tree planting ceremony on the 23rd of June at 4.00 p.m. at the Urban Council library premises and at 5.00 p.m. at the College of Education premises.

On the 24th of June at 1.30 p.m. the finalists of the Art competition were judged from 50 participating schools in the Vavuniya District.

The main event “Olympic Day Run’ commenced at 3.00 p.m. from the Urban Council grounds, Vavuniya over a four kilometer distance. The Olympic Day Run was participated over 1000 school children.

A cultural show, PT Display by Sri Lanka Army, donation of books to 50 participating schools by Sri Lanka Telecom and the distribution of prize money for the Art competition and IOC certificates to all participants of the Run were followed.

Art Competition included a Banner Competition and a Poster competition. Banner Competition was a team event limited to five children per school and the Poster Competition was an individual event.

Cash awards were given to the first three competitors in the Art competition as follows.
