Advanced Sport Management Course – Session 4 – October 28, 29 and 30, 2011

The Session 4 of the Advanced Sport Management Course (ASMC 2011/2012) conducted by the NOCSL in collaboration with the IOC Olympic Solidarity Programme was held from 28-30 Oct. at the Olympic House Auditorium.
Sixteen participants holding executive positions in number of sport organisations and institutes completed the Session 4 and qualified to participate in Session 5 of the ASMC. The key feature of the Session 4 was mainly the Case Study Presentations based on units ‘Managing Marketing’ and ‘Managing Human Resources’ of the Managing Olympic Sport Organisations (MOSO) Manual which were delivered by the participants:

The ‘Organising a Major Sport Event’ unit was delivered on Day 3 by Course Director B.L.H. Perera and Secretary General Maxwell de Silva who is a facilitator of the course.
The session received a good contribution from the participants and was concluded with a successful note.
1st South Asian Beach Games, Hambantota – 2011

The inaugural South Asian Beach Games were held in Hambantota, from 08th to 14th October 2011. Hambantota is a city that is rising to be an economic hub from the ashes of Tsunami and this city has also submitted her bid to hold Commonwealth Games in 2018.
The Opening Ceremony of the Games was held in the eve of the 08th of October in the beach of Hambantota. HE Mahinda Rajapakse, the President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka was the Chief Guest and Hon. Namal Rajapakse, Hon. Dilan Perera, Chairman of SABG Organizing Committee, Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Minister of Sports, Hon. Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Lt. Gen. Syed Arif Hassan, Vice President of OCA, Hon. Mohomed Rasheed, State Minister of Youth & Sports in Maldives, President & Secretary General of NOC Maldives, President & Secretary General of Nepal were also graced this prestigious occasion. It was a colourful and glamorous evening which was ended with fireworks.
There was a large participation of about 500 athletes and officials from our neighbouring countries, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Earlier it was scheduled to take part in 12 sport disciplines but at the last moment 2 sports disciplines, Triathlon and Body Building were dropped due to the less participation from other countries.

India became the first with 11 Gold, 9 Silver and 7 Bronze medals, Sri Lanka obtained the second place with 9 Gold, 10 Silver and 9 Bronze medals and Pakistan was the third with 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze medals in these Games.

The Closing Ceremony was held on the 14th of October and all the athletes got together in the beach of Hambantota. Hon. Chamal Rajapakse, the Speaker of the Parliament was the Chief Guest.
The 1st South Asian Beach Games – Hambantota 2011 was successfully concluded and added to the Olympic History remarkably.
