National Olympic Committee (NOC) gathered Sri Lankan Sri Lankan sportsmen and sportswomen from 31 sports. The Introduction was held on 29th October 2018 at the NOC auditorium.
Mr. Maxwell De Silva General Secretary (NOC), Mr. Asanga Seneviratne Head of High-Performance (HP) & Vice President (NOC), along with the HP committee members met the National athletes and discussed the NOC’s new strategy to improve the performance of athletes in line with world standards.
Nearly thirty (30) athletes participated from the 31members including Parami Wasanthi, the bronze medalist at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) 2018.
Mr. De Silva addressed the gathering firstly wishing the YOG participants and stating the objective of the meeting. He highlighted the transformation of other Asian countries and how Sri Lanka must plan to go to the next level.
Mr. Seneviratne who has been appointed the new Head of HP of the SLNOC said that this was the first instance that they had created such a committee and acknowledged the importance of supporting our National athletes and professionalising and creating a pathway for success at international events. "We do not have a HP program for any of our sports other than cricket and rugby to some extent. We first have to focus on the mere basic needs of our athletes before talking about advance training and education. Psychologically support, Nutrition, scientific physical training , international competitions prior to major events are some of the areas we hope to plan and implement."
The Athletes were given an opportunity to speak and many of them took the opportunity to highlight issues and challenges they face and now the NOC will work together with them to Help achieve international success in the future.
